덴마크 아티스트 듀오 AVPD의 개인전 ≪새로운 새벽이 사그라든다 New Dawn Fades≫는 압축적인 형식과 더불어 예리한 시각이 두드러지는 전시로, 그들의 신작 5점을 선보입니다. 본 전시에서 소개하는 새로운 작품들은 공상 과학과 장식용 반짝이(glitter), 플라스틱, 석고, 스티로폼 포장재와 같이 하위문화의 요소나 값싼 재료에서 아이디어가 시작되어 작품으로 발전하면서 20년이 넘는 AVPD의 작품 세계에서 특별하고 독특한 위치를 차지하고 있습니다. AVPD의 작품은 일상에서 사용되는 기성품이나 평범한 재료에 비판적 시각을 더하며 흥미로운 조화를 만들어냅니다. 이런 아이디어와 전략을 통해 개념미술, 아르테 포베라, 팝아트와 같은 기존의 예술사적 지위와는 차별화되는 독특한 지점에 놓입니다. 본 전시에서 소개되는 모든 작품은 현대의 소비문화에서 발견한 미학, 즉 쓸모 없는 간판, 버려진 포장재, 시각적 폐기물에 기반합니다. 모두 기능성에 중점을 둔 산업 디자인 과정을 거쳤지만 지금은 낡은 잔해로 남아있는 것들입니다. AVPD는 이번 전시를 통해 이런 ‘쓸모를 잃은’ 폐기물에 생명과 의미를 부여하고, 강력한 미적 잠재력을 가진 ‘가치 있는’ 것으로 재탄생시키고자 합니다.

≪New Dawn Fades≫ is a small, compressed and at the same time a sharp exhibition introducing five new works by the Danish artist duo AVPD. These five new works hold a special and peculiar position in AVPD’s oeuvre and are composed of odd elements of science fiction, glitter and low status materials like plastic, plaster and packaging. AVPD’s works create an interesting blend that combines ideas and strategies from usually differentiated artistic positions like conceptual art, arte povera and pop art through the use of ready-made forms, ordinary materials and elements from everyday life with a critical edge. The works are all based on found aesthetics from the consumer culture: obsolete signs, used packaging and visual waste. Things that have all undergone a design process with a strong focus on functionality, but which are now left as useless remains. With the exhibition New Dawn Fades AVPD aims to empower these remains and realize their strong aesthetical potential and that way turn leftovers into value packs.

수행자로서의 공간

시간성, 움직임, 나타남과 사라짐, 가깝고도 먼 거리감. 이 모든 것은 아티스트 듀오 AVPD의 작업을 설명하는 핵심적인 단어들입니다. 그들의 작품은 주체와 대상, 그리고 맥락의 별자리 사이에 펼쳐져 있으며, 최소한의 개념적 접근을 통해 우리가 세상을 경험하는 방식과 세상이 우리에게 미치는 영향에 대한 준과학적이고 현상학적인 연구를 수행하는 공간 설치 및 개별 미술 작품을 포함하고 있습니다.

AVPD의 작업은 관객을 작품 안으로 초대하며 동시에 작품에 의해 도전을 받도록 합니다. 그들의 작품은 관객에게 길을 안내하는 동시에 오해에 빠트려 길을 잃도록 하는 방향성을 번갈아 제시하기도 합니다. 때로는 작품의 공간적 변형으로 인해 관객의 자기 위치 인식(orientation)이 방해를 받아 제대로 된 식별이 어려울 때도 있습니다. 이러한 작품들은 관객에게 익숙한 재료들을 사용하면서도 의도적으로 공간을 파악하기 힘들게 하여 인식왜곡이 발행하는 공간을 조성합니다 또한, 공간이 관객의 보행과 움직임에 영향을 주면서 관객이 작품 안에서 수행해야 하는 퍼포먼스를 유도합니다.

수행적인 공간(performative space)은 단순히 무언가를 재현하기 보다는 어떤 경험을 제시하는 공간입니다. 이는 마치 말을 할 때 그 말이 어떤 행동을 예고하는 것과 유사합니다 예를 들어, 공간을 지나가고, 길을 잃고, 크거나 작게 느끼고, 보고 보여지는 것과 같은 행위입니다. AVPD의 작품이 무엇을 의미하는지 알고 싶다면, 그 작품이 실제로 하는 일과 작품이 만들어내는 상황, 그리고 작품이 불러일으키는 생각 속에서 그 답을 찾을 수 있습니다. AVPD의 작품은 작품과 관객이 모두 동등한 수행자로서 참여하는 상황 미학 속에 존재하기 때문입니다.

Space as performer

Time, movement, appearance, disappearance, proximity and distance. These are words, which may be attached to the practice of the artist duo AVPD. The works are stretched between the constellation of subject, object and context and includes installations and art pieces, which through a minimal and conceptual approach take upon quasi-scientific and phenomenological studies of how we experience the world and how we are influenced by the world.

AVPDs practice promises a conscious orientation towards the viewer, alternately invited inside and challenged by the work; alternately guided and misled. In the works of AVPD the identification often becomes misidentification, when the viewer's orientation is disturbed by the spatial transformations in the art pieces. When reality is displaced and recognizable materials create unrecognizable spaces. When the spaces ‘act’ as they form and influence the walk and movement of the viewer and as they make a performance that the viewer must perform in.

The performative space is a space that presents rather than represents. It is comparable to an utterance, which meaning is the act it predicts: To go through space, to get lost, to feel big or small, to see and be seen. If one would ask what the works of AVPD mean we must find the answer in what the works do. In the situation they create. In the thinking they generate. The works of AVPD write themselves into a situational aesthetics in which both the work and the viewer must be considered as equal performers.
